Choice of BUT GMP

After my BAC STI2D, I decided to go to the IUT of Cachan to develop my knowledge in the field of general mechanics. I made this choice thanks to my final year ITEC teacher who had strongly advised me to study at the IUT de Cachan for my profile, as I liked innovation and science.

It is in September 2021, that my life changed, by integrating the training of BUT GMP (Mechanical and Production Engineering) at the IUT of Cachan. Indeed, I discovered the world of higher education, which had nothing to do with the STI2D both in theory and practice (except for SolidWorks). I had to adapt very quickly to the workload and the expectations of the training.

At the beginning of the training, I was really lost, I didn't know much about the majority of the subjects that the training included. I decided to invest myself to the maximum in order to succeed in moving on to second year.  Having obtained grades that did not correspond to my investment in the first semester, I wanted to abandon the training . But I remembered one of my values which is to"Never give up despite the ordeal that lies ahead".

Following this in semester 2, I told myself that I was going to start all over again from 0. I reviewed my methods of work and listening in class and the grades followed. Very proud of this, I continue to invest myself more and more every day. Every day, I have the chance to learn new things during my training, which fulfills me greatly.

But what is a BUT GMP?

The BUT GMP is a professional and multidisciplinary university training, giving a large place to practical application. It makes it possible to acquire time skills on thetheoretical planethatconvenientwhich can be exploited in theindustrial sector.

The following subjects are mainly studied there, access to theory: mathematics, mechanics, dimensioning of structures and at the practical level: the design office, production, metrology and the organization of industrial production. There are new subjects each semester, which makes it possible to be very complete in the field of industrial mechanics. In practice, we learn to use a lot of software, machines and measurement tools, which allows us to be flexible. The goal is therefore to train us as senior technicians, but also to prepare us for engineering schools for those who wish.

There are different types of courses:

  • Amphitheaters where we see the course in general and which allow us to prepare a little for TD (directed work) and TP (practical work)

  • Tutorials where we will generally practice a subject more specifically (mechanics, dimensioning of structures, mathematics, materials science, etc.)

  • LTP where we practice concretely what we have often seen in TD (design office, manufacturing, metrology, organization of industrial production)

During tutorials, but especially during tutorials, there is a lot of group work.

The BUT is a diploma evaluated in continuous assessment, that is to say that we regularly have DS (supervised homework), work reports and defenses to present our work.

My favourite subjects are :

  • The design office, because I can exhibit my creativity, but also develop it.

  • Manufacturing, because understanding how to manufacture a part that has been designed in CAD is very interesting for me. At the beginning, we have it in front of our computer then in our hands, it is fascinating for me.

Today I understand a lot more about the mechanical systems around us, that is, what is the mechanism behind them, but also how they are made. The discovery of production allowed me to understand why certain parts that I created in CAD were not manufacturable or difficult.

A day in BUT GMP,

it's do this
